On a cold, April afternoon – with Mother Nature unable to decide if she wanted to rain, shine or snow – we descended on the Emerging Garden in Wausau, Wisconsin for our shoot.  It’s one of three delightful community gardens in that urban area.  We hope our “Land Girls” will inspire you to recreate a vintage look of your own or plant a victory garden.

The inspiration for this stylized Victory Garden Photo Shoot was sparked while researching ideas for my home vegetable garden.  I’ve always been a fan of the women and fashion of the 1940s. And, when I came across old vintage posters and pictures encouraging gardening & buying local for sustainability, I was struck by how that sentiment echoes strongly today.

The Inspiration

I thought gardening and sustainability were newer concepts. I had no idea our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had already invented the idea.  My salons (Euphoria Spalon and Brush & Bashful) have always been committed to sustainability and I strive to be eco-friendly.  And I began to think:  how fun would it be to encourage fellow women to bring back the victory garden and inspire them with images of strong, beautiful women styled in vintage attire and wearing our take on retro 40s hair & makeup looks?

Land Girls

“Land Girls” were the direct inspiration for our stylized photo shoot. That’s the nickname people gave to The Women’s Land Army. (WLA). The WLA was a British civilian organization originally created during World War I. The organization brought women in to work on farms to replace the men serving in the war. Skeptics didn’t think the women could handle such hard labour but The Land Girls proved their worth. And they were once again called to serve during World War II.

The strength and determination of these hard working women is incredible admirable. And I love seeing old pictures of them. They are truly an inspiration. Want more inspiration? Check out my blog post on Victory Gardening.
